Aquatic Recreation - Benefits of Our Pools

pool at Courage Center St. Croix

Warm-Water Pools for Therapy and Recreation

Courage Center offers a variety of therapeutic recreational services in our warm-water, accessible pools.  We emphasize low-impact physical activity that helps increase flexibility, strength, stamina and balance.

The warmth of our pools (92 degrees) helps to reduce muscle spasticity, tension, aches, stress and anxiety.  This warm environment provides a comfortable setting for sensory integration and enhances the teaching of swimming skills.

Our pools offer many accessible options such as wheelchair entry and exit ramps, stairs in place of ladders, aquatic benches, adaptive equipment and varied flat level pool depths.

First-time pool users must complete an initial assessment and orientation.  During the assessment, an aquatic therapist introduces you to the pool and helps you design a program that will meet your individual needs and goals.  Programs include one-to-one aquatic exercise, group classes, adapted swim lessons, relaxation techniques and independent exercise options.

Benefits of Warm Water Exercise:

  • Calming and relaxing
  • Increased range of motion due to relaxed muscles
  • Increased circulation and decreased swelling in joints
  • Reduced joint compression from pull of gravity
  • Increased muscle strength from water’s resistance
  • Increased endurance and strength for activities of daily living
  • Socialization and increased quality of life
